Greater Manchester Police's Operation AVRO officers' hectic day of action in Oldham

Greater Manchester Police's Operation AVRO targeted criminal activities in Oldham, including knife checks at Shaw tram stop, traffic enforcement, and early morning arrests.

Oldham became the latest battleground in Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing war on local crime Tuesday as officers flooded the district for Operation AVRO’s monthly crackdown.

The Shaw and Royton Neighbourhood Policing Team joined forces with Metrolink staff at Shaw tram stop, deploying a knife arch to screen passengers for weapons while transport staff simultaneously checked tickets and passes. The coordinated effort formed part of the force-wide initiative that targets criminal activities in a different district each month.

Earlier in the day, the Saddleworth and Lees team conducted traffic checkpoints across the area, focusing enforcement on what officers term the “Fatal 4” - speeding, driving under the influence, not wearing seatbelts, and mobile phone use while driving. Officers maintained a visible presence throughout the community, engaging with residents and promoting road safety.

The Chadderton Neighbourhood Policing Team concentrated their efforts on Broadway, while other officers executed early morning warrants across Oldham, resulting in multiple arrests. Throughout the operation, GMP provided real-time updates on their website, including images and video footage of the ongoing activities. The force reminded residents that anyone can safely and anonymously dispose of knives in the Forever Amnesty bins located across Greater Manchester.
