Greater Manchester partners support Home Office ‘Safer Streets Summer Initiative’ to reduce crime in town centres and keep people safe
Greater Manchester partners, including Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Transport for Greater Manchester, have launched the Home Office's 'Safer Streets Summer Initiative' (locally known as Safe4Summer) to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in town centres and communities. The initiative includes increased police visibility, community engagement, and partnership efforts to tackle issues like illegal e-bike use and drug dealing. GMP highlights past successes in reducing burglary and vehicle crime and aims to ensure a safe summer for residents and businesses. The initiative aligns with GMP's neighbourhood policing model and includes additional neighbourhood officers.
Greater Manchester launched the Home Office’s Safer Streets Summer Initiative on Monday, 30 June, deploying extra officers to town-centre crime hot spots under the local banner Safe4Summer.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle, GMP’s lead for Local Policing, said neighbourhood teams will spend the coming weeks targeting illegal e-bike use, drug dealing and other anti-social behaviour. “Residents and business owners will see an increase in the visibility of officers and partners, as we work together to ensure a safe summer for all. This isn’t about trying to spoil people’s fun over the summer months, it is making sure everyone can enjoy themselves without feeling unsafe or being hurt,” he said, adding that proactive work since 2021 has already cut burglary by a third and vehicle crime by a quarter.
Deputy Mayor for Safer and Stronger Communities Kate Green said the drive “is a testament to our dedication to reducing crime and enhancing the quality of life for our residents”, while Transport for Greater Manchester’s TravelSafe Partnership Manager, also named Kate Green, pledged extra patrols across the Bee Network to deter holiday-period disorder.
Every district ward now has a named neighbourhood officer and the 176 additional neighbourhood posts created in April will bolster summer patrols. Residents can sign up for free area alerts at www.beeintheloop.co.uk and report crime via LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk, by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
