GMP’s dedicated team that hunts Greater Manchester’s most wanted criminals
The Force Critical Wanted Unit (FCWU) of Greater Manchester Police is a specialized team tasked with locating and arresting the most dangerous fugitives in the region. The unit focuses on suspects involved in serious crimes such as murder, aggravated burglary, and firearms offenses. In 2024, the FCWU adopted 85 targets, resulting in 111 arrests, including cases of murder, attempted murder, and other violent crimes. A notable case involved the arrest of Xaviour Wynter and Demari Rose, who were convicted in connection with the fatal stabbing of Salah Eldin Adam in Old Trafford. The FCWU's efforts have led to significant convictions and community safety improvements.
Greater Manchester Police’s Force Critical Wanted Unit (FCWU) has captured 111 of Britain’s most dangerous fugitives in 2024, including seven wanted for murder or conspiracy to murder, 15 for attempted murder, and 18 for firearms offences.
The specialist unit, which hunts criminals who pose “a real and significant threat to our communities,” officially adopted 85 targets this year - up from 78 targets in 2023 when they made 95 arrests. The 2024 figures include 14 arrests for grievous bodily harm, six for kidnap, three for rape, and three for arson.
One recent success involved the capture of Xaviour Wynter, who fled after 21-year-old Salah Eldin Adam was fatally stabbed in the neck during a disturbance on Kings Road, Old Trafford, at 7:45pm on May 31, 2023. Police found the victim collapsed in a garden, and the FCWU was called in to track down Wynter and fellow suspect Demari Rose.
Both fugitives were captured and appeared at Manchester Crown Square Crown Court on August 2. Rose, born December 19, 2003, received a life sentence with a minimum 24-year term for murder. Wynter, born June 8, 2003, received 13 years and eight months for manslaughter and possession of a bladed article.
Detective Superintendent Joseph Harrop, who leads the FCWU, said: “Utilising our specialist team of officers, we successfully tracked down the suspect and he has since been convicted and sent to prison. This is just one of the hundreds of examples of fugitives we have caught in recent years.”
