GMP continue to use footage submitted by you to catch dangerous road users to keep our roads safer

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reports a significant increase in dashcam submissions through Operation Snap, aimed at improving road safety by prosecuting dangerous drivers. Submissions rose from 3,715 in 2020 to 5,078 in 2023, with 4,729 received in 2024 so far, resulting in 3,110 positive outcomes. The portal targets offences like close passes, mobile phone use, speeding, and irresponsible parking. GMP emphasizes public involvement and highlights hotspot areas for enforcement. The initiative supports Vision Zero, aiming to eliminate road deaths by 2040.

Dashcam Portal Drives 85% Surge in Road Traffic Convictions Across Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Police’s dashcam submission portal has delivered a dramatic 85% increase in successful traffic prosecutions, with 3,110 drivers facing penalties from 4,729 submissions received up to mid-October 2024.

The Operation Snap portal, which allows road users to upload video evidence of driving offences, has seen submissions rise steadily from 3,715 reports in 2020 to 5,078 in 2023. The most recent six-month period from August 2023 to January 2024 recorded 1,563 positive outcomes - an 85% jump compared to the same period the previous year.

Footage submitted captures a range of dangerous behaviours including close passes on cyclists, mobile phone use, red light running, speeding, and pavement parking. Police have identified repeat offence hotspots around Fountain Street in Manchester city centre, Atherton Road in Hindley, Oldham Road in Uppermill, and Blackburn Road in Bolton.

Superintendent Gareth Parkin of GMP’s Safer Transport Unit emphasised the portal’s role in protecting vulnerable road users: “Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists are at much greater risk of serious injury and death than those in vehicles. Our priority is to protect those most vulnerable.”

The force attends approximately 925 road traffic collisions monthly, requiring 3,000 officer attendances. Operation Snap forms part of Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate all road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040, with an interim target of 50% reduction by 2030.
