North-West Artists Confront Climate Crisis in New Exhibition

Five north-west artists confront the climate emergency head-on in a new exhibition opening December 7 at Gallery Oldham. The show, titled “Seven Seconds to Midnight,” takes its name from the Doomsday Clock - the 1947 indicator showing humanity’s proximity to self-destruction.

The exhibition runs through March 1 and features works by Rebecca Chesney, Antony Hall, Mishka Henner, Adele Jordan and Rae Story. Their varied and compelling pieces will be displayed alongside endangered species of birds and pressed flowers from Gallery Oldham’s natural history collection.

The Doomsday Clock currently stands at 90 seconds to midnight - the closest humanity has been to disaster since the indicator was created. Each January, world factors including climate change determine the clock’s setting.

A special artist talk will take place Saturday, January 25 at 2pm in Gallery 2, exploring the question “What is the role of the Artist at the End of Time?” Visitors can attend without booking.
