Foundation celebrates success of Oldham schools finals
The Oldham RLFC 1876 Foundation celebrated the success of the Oldham schools rugby league finals, with Year 9 players from seven schools competing at the Melrose base, and Year 8 and Year 7 finals scheduled for the following weeks. Saddleworth School emerged as the Year 9 champions. The event highlighted community engagement and the foundation's commitment to youth sports.
Rugby league’s next generation took center stage at Oldham’s Netpar Training Centre as 90 Year 9 students from seven schools battled for borough supremacy in the schools finals last week.
Saddleworth School emerged victorious in the competition held at the Roughyeds’ regenerated Melrose base, with more than 100 family members and teachers cheering on the young athletes. The tournament featured schools including Royton and Crompton, Newman, Brian Clarke Academy and The Blue Coat School, with several players experiencing rugby league for the first time.
The action continues today with the Year 8 finals climax, followed by the Year 7 championship on May 19 at the same venue. Every participant received a free ticket to Oldham’s Championship match against Toulouse at Boundary Park on Saturday.
“It’s fantastic to see so many Year 9 students from across the Oldham borough competing in these rugby league finals at Melrose, Netpar Training Centre in Chadderton,” said Chris Chamberlain, CEO at Oldham RLFC 1876 Foundation. “This event showcases the strong passion for rugby league in our community and ORLFC 1876 Foundation’s commitment to providing opportunities for young people to engage in healthy, active competition using the power of rugby league to engage and inspire. We thank the players, parents, volunteers, teachers and Oldham Schools Sports Partnership for making it a success.”
