Fantastic Fondop does it again!
Oldham Athletic came from behind to beat Hartlepool 2-1 in a National League match, with Mike Fondop scoring the winning goal. The victory strengthens Oldham's play-off hopes as they sit fourth in the table with three matches remaining.
Mike Fondop’s 17th league goal of the season completed Oldham Athletic’s comeback as they defeated Hartlepool United 2-1 at Boundary Park on Good Friday, revitalizing their play-off push in front of 6,717 spectators.
The victory ended Latics’ three-match winless streak and solidified their fourth-place position in the National League table with just three rounds remaining.
Manager Micky Mellon reshuffled his starting lineup, bringing in leading scorer Fondop, Vimal Yoganathan, and Will Sutton for Joe Garner, Jake Leake, and Jordan Rossiter. The hosts dominated possession throughout the first half, with Tom Conlon firing two efforts wide and Yoganathan testing the keeper from distance.
Hartlepool struck first against the run of play in the 39th minute when Mani Dieseruvwe headed home after Gary Madine’s initial shot was saved. The lead lasted barely a minute as Charlie Raglan equalized with a downward header from Conlon’s corner.
The decisive moment arrived in the 62nd minute when Jake Caprice’s surge down the left created space for Conlon to deliver a pinpoint cross that Fondop headed past Adam Smith. Despite late pressure, Oldham held firm with substitute appearances from Josh Lundstram, Corry Evans, and Joe Garner.
“You’ve just got to get the victories and try and get the points at this stage of the season,” Mellon said. “All credit to the players today buoyed on by our incredible support. A really good day.”
Latics travel to York City on Easter Monday for their next fixture.
