A Failsworth-based single mum has been named a finalist in the 2026 UK Small Business Awards, earning recognition for her rapidly growing counselling business.
Mika Warne, founder of Meeks Counselling and Psychotherapy, has been shortlisted for Best New Business, marking a major milestone in what has been a deeply personal and determined journey.
While studying at university, Mika was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia, challenges that once made her question her ability to succeed academically and professionally. Rather than holding her back, she used the experience as motivation to push forward.
“Being diagnosed later in life was overwhelming at first,” Mika said. “But it also gave me answers. I realised I wasn’t incapable. I just learn differently. From that point, I stopped doubting myself and started building something meaningful.”
Alongside raising her child as a single parent, Mika completed her training as a counsellor before launching her own private practice. Her business now supports clients both locally across Greater Manchester and worldwide, offering a safe and supportive space for individuals facing a wide range of emotional and mental health challenges.
Passionate about making counselling more accessible, Mika also delivers educational presentations and continues to expand her services through workshops and online resources.
“I started this business because I genuinely care about helping people feel heard and supported,” she said. “To now be recognised on a national level is something I never imagined, especially considering where I started.”
The UK Small Business Awards celebrate outstanding small businesses across the country, recognising innovation, resilience and community impact. Mika hopes her journey will inspire others, particularly those facing learning difficulties or personal challenges, to pursue their goals.
“Your starting point doesn’t define your future,” she added. “If anything, it can become your greatest strength.”
