Police Arrest Teen After Car Chase and Weapon Discovery in Derker
Greater Manchester Police officers from the newly launched Operation Vulcan arrested an 18-year-old man in Derker on Monday night after a suspicious vehicle attempted to flee from police.
The incident began when officers in an unmarked patrol car noticed a vehicle being driven suspiciously. Upon activating their blue lights to initiate a traffic stop, the driver rammed the police vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape.
Following the collision, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers quickly apprehended one suspect, while investigations continue to locate the remaining individuals.
A search of the abandoned vehicle revealed a baseball bat, a machete sheath, and what police described as a quantity of Class B drugs. The arrested teenager faces multiple charges including possession of an offensive weapon, drug possession, driving without a license, and driving without insurance.
Inspector Dan Cullum of Operation Vulcan stated that this arrest exemplifies the unit’s commitment to reducing criminal activity in the area. Since its launch three weeks ago, Operation Vulcan has resulted in 22 arrests, the seizure of 13 vehicles being used criminally or anti-socially, five weapons confiscated, and significant quantities of drugs removed from the streets.
“Our officers were alerted to suspicious behavior, and when confronted, the driver attempted to evade us,” Inspector Cullum said. “This intervention has removed an uninsured vehicle, weapons, and drugs from our streets, while taking a dangerous driver off the road.”
Operation Vulcan continues to maintain a visible presence in the community around the clock. Police encourage residents to report any suspicious activity through Greater Manchester Police’s 24/7 Live Chat service, by speaking with local neighbourhood officers, or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
