Oldham's First Asian Honorary Freeman Dr Zahid Chauhan Appointed

Oldham has made history by appointing its first Asian Honorary Freeman, with Councillor Dr Zahid Chauhan receiving the borough's highest civic honour at a ceremony in the Council Chamber. The GP and long-serving Alexandra ward councillor was recognised for his exceptional contribution to public life, healthcare leadership, and social justice work that has shaped Oldham over the past decade.

The appointment marks a significant milestone for the town, with Dr Chauhan becoming the 28th person to receive this honour since its establishment. His journey from local GP to Mayor of Oldham during 2023-2025 reflects the changing face of civic leadership in the borough, where he has overseen the pandemic response and founded Homeless Friendly in 2017 to support rough sleepers.

The ceremony, held at 11am on Saturday, was attended by the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Eddie Moores, Deputy Mayor Councillor Brian Hobin, Chief Executive Shelley Kipling, and Monitoring Officer Alex Bougatef. Dr Chauhan, who has represented Alexandra ward since 2013, described the honour as 'a moment of great pride' and emphasised its significance as the first time this recognition has gone to an Asian person in Oldham's history.

Mayor Moores praised Dr Chauhan's 'long-standing commitment to public service, healthcare leadership and social justice' that has had a lasting impact on the borough.
