Dr Kershaw’s Hospice launches free art sessions for people with life-limiting illnesses

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton is launching free fortnightly art sessions called The Nightbird Project for people with life-limiting or serious illnesses, aimed at fostering connection and creativity. An open day will be held on February 15, with sessions starting March 8.

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton will launch free creative workshops for people with life-limiting illnesses through its new Nightbird Project, starting with an open day on February 15.

The hospice’s Wellbeing Centre will host the introductory session from 10:30am to 1:30pm on Saturday, February 15, giving prospective participants a chance to meet organizers before the fortnightly workshops begin March 8. Community artist Jenny Gaskell, whose work focuses on connection and grief, will guide each Saturday session where adults can share their stories through poetry, painting, origami and other creative activities.

Previous participants have praised the project’s atmosphere, calling sessions “calming and relaxing” and “friendly, colourful and bright.” One attendee noted: “I leave every session feeling better than when I came in.”

Lisa Hoctor, senior counsellor at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, emphasized the project’s inclusive nature: “There will be plenty of brews, biscuits and friendly faces to welcome you to the hospice. We welcome a diversity of life experiences, ages, diagnoses and ethnicities. This celebratory, creative project invites you to share your stories and build meaningful relationships. As a group, we’ll support your wellbeing and resilience while creating joyful art about your life.”

Spaces are limited for the March 8 launch. Interested participants can contact [email protected] or call 0161 624 2727 and ask for Lisa, mentioning the Nightbird Project.
