Detectives make an arrest and continue to appeal for information following fatal incident in Rochdale

A 38-year-old man was fatally stabbed on New Years Day in Rochdale, leading to a murder investigation. A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and police are appealing for further information from the public, including any footage or eyewitness accounts.

Man Arrested After New Year’s Day Fatal Stabbing in Rochdale

A 38-year-old man died from a knife wound on Sussex Street in Rochdale shortly after police were called to reports of a disturbance on New Year’s Day. Emergency crews reached the victim, who was found on nearby Essex Street, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police launched a murder inquiry and by Thursday morning detectives from the Major Incident Team had arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder.

Detective Inspector Paul Davies said: “This is a truly tragic incident, and the thoughts of the entire investigation team remain with the victim’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with his loss. While we have one man in custody, we are continuing to appeal to the public and the local community for any information they may have about this incident. No matter how small the information may seem, it may be crucial to our investigation and assist us in providing answers for a grieving family.”

Officers are urging anyone who was in the area on 1 January and saw or heard anything suspicious, or who has doorbell, dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact police on 101 quoting incident 715 of 01/01/2025. Anonymous tips can be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
