Depleted Oldham RU edged out at Liverpool Collegiate

Oldham RUFC narrowly lost 35-30 to Liverpool Collegiate in a closely contested match, despite a strong performance and leading at times. Key moments included Alex Jobson's kicking and a try assist, but errors and penalties cost Oldham the game.

Oldham RUFC fell 35-30 to Liverpool Colegiate in a dramatic finish that saw the visitors surrender a late lead after playing with 14 men for the final quarter.

Despite fielding eight new faces in an 18-man squad ravaged by availability issues, Oldham struck first through Alex Jobson’s penalty after dominating early possession. The home side responded with two converted tries to build a 12-3 advantage, before Louis Fitton finished a 30-meter move following Jobson’s perfectly weighted miss-pass. Jobson’s conversion narrowed the gap to 12-10.

The fly-half’s 50-meter penalty gave Oldham a 13-12 edge, but a scrum turnover allowed Collegiate to reclaim the lead 19-13 at the break. Oldham roared back when Tom Davies drew the fullback and sent Jobson over for a converted try that made it 20-19, only for Collegiate to answer immediately and stretch their advantage to 29-20.

Owen Hewson’s precise passing put Davies through again, with Jobson’s conversion cutting the deficit to 29-27. Another Jobson penalty gave Oldham a 30-29 lead with 15 minutes remaining, but Hewson’s yellow card for offside proved costly as Collegiate kicked two penalties while Oldham played a man down. The visitors pressed deep into Collegiate territory in the dying moments but couldn’t find the winning try.

Jobson finished with 15 points and earned man-of-the-match honors for his kicking, try-assist and solo score.
