Dementia UK shares tips on tackling tough conversations around dementia ahead of free clinic in Oldham

Dementia UK and Nationwide are hosting free face-to-face clinics in Oldham, Bolton, and Altrincham in January 2025, offering specialist support for dementia-related concerns. The clinics, led by Admiral Nurses, provide practical and emotional advice on dementia, including diagnosis and financial issues. Dementia UK also shares tips on discussing dementia with loved ones and encouraging them to seek medical advice. The initiative is part of Nationwide's Fairer Futures social impact programme.

Free Dementia Support Clinics Return to Greater Manchester This January

Specialist Admiral Nurses from Dementia UK will once again transform Nationwide branches in Oldham, Bolton and Altrincham into free dementia support clinics throughout January 2025, offering confidential face-to-face guidance to anyone affected by the condition.

The clinics, running for three days at each location, provide practical and emotional advice on all aspects of dementia - from addressing memory concerns and understanding diagnoses to navigating financial and legal challenges. Appointments can be booked through Dementia UK’s website.

With someone developing dementia every three minutes in the UK, the sessions arrive as families increasingly struggle to obtain accurate diagnoses. Ahead of the clinics, Dementia UK shared guidance for tackling difficult conversations with loved ones showing symptoms: act when they express frustration, explain that symptoms could indicate various conditions, and support them through appointments while helping maintain symptom diaries.

Ruby Guild, Admiral Nurse at Dementia UK, said: “We’re looking forward to returning to Greater Manchester. Nationwide branches offer a safe and private space for people to access specialist support for dementia, and the Fairer Futures partnership is helping us bring face-to-face support to people in a familiar location.”

The Greater Manchester clinics form part of Nationwide’s Fairer Futures programme, which addresses dementia, youth homelessness and family poverty through charity partnerships. The building society funds 30 Admiral Nurse posts through Dementia UK and hosts 200 pop-up clinics nationwide.
