Oldham friends trek 32 miles across six Manchester football grounds for dementia research

Five Oldham friends walked 32 miles in a single day, visiting six of Greater Manchester’s football stadiums to raise almost £500 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The group set off from Boundary Park, home of Oldham Athletic, before heading to FC United’s Broadhurst Park, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, Manchester United’s Old Trafford and finishing at Salford City’s Peninsula Stadium.

Samuel, who organised the challenge, said: “It was great to do it with a group of close friends. We are all over the moon with the amount we’ve managed to raise so far.”

Money donated via their online fundraising page will fund studies into prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia, which affects nearly one million people in the UK. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause, impacting memory, behaviour and personality.

Simon McDermott, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population - one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition. Alzheimer’s and the other forms of dementia are now one of society’s biggest medical challenges, but with research they can be overcome. We can’t thank Sam and the team enough for raising vital funds for dementia research and helping us in our mission to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia.”
