Debut delight for Mellon Jr
Oldham Athletic (Latics) secured a 1-0 away victory against Cambridge United, with debutant Michael Mellon scoring the winning goal in the 21st minute. The goal was assisted by Jamie Robson after a pass from Luke Hannant. Cambridge United had several chances to equalize, including a goal-line clearance by Hannant and a saved free-kick by Jake Eastwood. Manager Micky Mellon expressed delight with his son's performance and impact on the team.
Michael Mellon marked his Oldham Athletic debut with the winning goal against Cambridge United - and celebrated with the man who signed him, manager and father Micky Mellon.
The 20-year-old striker, borrowed from Burnley on Thursday, settled the League Two contest in the 21st minute, sweeping Jamie Robson’s cut-back past keeper Jake Eastwood after Luke Hannant had unlocked the left flank.
Cambridge nearly levelled on the stroke of half-time when Matt Hudson misjudged Sullay Kaikai’s corner but recovered to block Kell Watts’ close-range drive, then survived a second scare on 54 minutes when Louis Appéré raced clear only to see Hannant hook his finish off the line.
Micky Mellon, booked for protesting a second-half decision, watched Tom Conlon’s 25-yard free-kick tipped over before the whistle confirmed a 1-0 away victory that lifts Latics into mid-table.
“He’s the one we wanted to complement what we already had because he has the qualities we need,” the manager said of his son. “I’m delighted he did what he did today.”
