Council buildings will help Oldhamers stay warm this winter
Oldham Council is offering warm spaces in libraries this winter to help residents cope with the cost of living crisis. The initiative includes free hot drinks, internet access, and family-friendly activities, alongside other support measures like emergency fuel payments and food vouchers.
Oldham’s libraries have reopened their doors as winter warm spaces, offering residents refuge from the cold with free hot drinks, internet access, and comfortable seating across all borough locations except Central Library.
Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah emphasized the initiative’s importance amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures. “I know that as we head into winter many people are still feeling the effects of the cost of living crisis. That’s why we’re doing everything we can to support people who need us. If you do need help please don’t struggle in silence. Come to one of our libraries if you need to go somewhere warm or call us on our helpline if you need that bit of extra support,” she said.
The council has equipped each participating library with welcoming spaces for all ages, digital lending schemes, family-friendly activities including Bounce and Rhyme Sessions, and staff trained to connect visitors with additional support services. Residents can access these resources at twelve locations including Chadderton, Crompton, Delph, Failsworth, Fitton Hill, Greenfield, Lees, Limehurst, Northmoor, Royton, and Uppermill libraries, along with the Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre.
This library program forms part of Oldham Council’s broader £2.5 million winter support campaign, which includes £200,000 allocated to charities and voluntary organizations, emergency fuel payments, and food vouchers for eligible families. Residents requiring immediate assistance can contact the council helpline at 0161 770 7007 weekdays between 9am and 5pm.
