The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Stephen Watson QPM, reaffirmed his commitment to public safety during a BBC Radio Manchester interview. He highlighted recent successes, including a reduction in crime victims by 25,000, proactive measures against knife crime, and positive outcomes in high-risk missing persons cases. Callers praised GMP's responsiveness in incidents involving dementia patients, a hammer attack in Bolton, and traffic disruptions. The Chief also discussed ongoing initiatives like Operation Vulcan in Oldham and advancements in the PoliceWorks records management system.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Vows Continued Crime Fight After 25,000 Fewer Victims

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Stephen Watson has pledged to maintain his force’s crime-fighting momentum after revealing 25,000 fewer victims of crime in the past year. The police chief made the announcement during his BBC Radio Manchester Hotseat appearance on Tuesday, highlighting the force’s commitment to investigating all reasonable lines of enquiry.

The hour-long phone-in generated overwhelmingly positive feedback from callers praising recent police responses. Janet from Timperley thanked PC Akeel for his assistance when her car broke down on Wilmslow Road while transporting a vulnerable friend to the eye hospital, describing him as “reassuring” and “kind” while managing traffic disruption.

Charlotte from Timperley expressed gratitude for officers’ efforts in finding her father Nick, a dementia sufferer who went missing over the weekend. “I couldn’t praise them enough,” she said, noting how seriously police took the search. Nick was one of two high-risk missing persons with dementia successfully located that weekend.

Brenda from Bolton called to commend local officers, both on and off duty, for their response to a recent hammer attack. She described their service as “wonderful” and said she was “so proud” of the officers involved. Watson attributed these positive outcomes to “the good people in GMP and the lengths officers are prepared to go to.”

The Chief Constable also addressed ongoing initiatives including proactive knife crime operations removing weapons from streets and confronting e-bike issues through Operation Vulcan in Oldham. He confirmed a preferred supplier has been identified for the new PoliceWorks records management system, with an official announcement expected soon.
