BINFO: Changes to Christmas and New Year bin collections

Oldham Council has announced changes to waste and recycling collections over the Christmas and New Year period, with alternative dates provided for collections due on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Residents are also advised on how to recycle Christmas trees and dispose of extra waste.

Oldham Council will adjust its waste and recycling schedule over the festive period to accommodate the Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day bank holidays.

Households whose bins are normally emptied on Wednesday 25 December will instead have them collected on Saturday 28 December, including both green bins and food caddies. Residents due a Thursday 26 December collection will see their bins picked up four days early, on Saturday 21 December, although green bins and food caddies will not be emptied that week and should be kept indoors.

The first week of January brings a further change: bins scheduled for Wednesday 1 January will be collected on Saturday 4 January, again without green-bin or food-caddy service. Garden and food waste will resume on the regular Wednesday 8 January round.

Once the decorations come down, real Christmas trees can be recycled. Chop the trunk and branches into small pieces—removing the wooden base block, lights and tinsel first—and place them in the green bin. Whole trees can also be taken to Arkwright Street Household Waste and Recycling Centre or left at drop-off points in five local parks from 28 December to 15 January: Higher Memorial Park in Failsworth, Royton Park, Werneth Park, Churchill Playing Fields in Greenfield and George Street Playing Fields in Shaw.
