All in a Daisy’s work: Welcome PC Williams and PD Daisy, the all-female team tackling crime across Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) introduced eight new dog handlers and dogs to their Tactical Dog Unit (TDU), including PC Williams and PD Daisy, an all-female team. PC Williams, with over five years of experience, transitioned from the Operation Venture team to the TDU. PD Daisy, an 18-month-old German Shepherd, and PC Williams completed a 13-week course and became operational in December 2024. The duo has already successfully tracked and located suspects, showcasing their strong chemistry and effectiveness in crime-fighting. PD Daisy demonstrates a clear distinction between her working and home behaviors, being excitable and eager during operations but calm and affectionate at home.
Greater Manchester Police has expanded its Tactical Dog Unit with the arrival of eight freshly-qualified handler-and-dog teams, among them PC Williams and 18-month-old German Shepherd Daisy.
PC Williams, who has served with GMP for five-and-a-half years, transferred to the unit from the Operation Venture team - the force’s dedicated response to serious violence and knife crime - having begun her career as a response officer in Trafford. She and Daisy completed the intensive 13-week licensing course in December 2024 and are now one of only four all-female pairings across the 200-strong section.
The pair were matched in the first week of training and have since built the rapport that underpins operational success. “I love proactive policing - building on intelligence from the public or other officers, finding my own jobs and seeing where they lead,” PC Williams said. “Doing that alongside a four-legged partner is a dream come true.”
Their first weeks on patrol have already produced results. During one track, Daisy picked up a scent from the driver’s door of an abandoned car, followed an alley into a courtyard where she indicated discarded property, then guided her handler toward a row of gardens. “She clearly wanted me to lift her over one particular fence,” PC Williams recalled. “Within seconds she’d locked on to a suspect hidden beneath a fallen panel - only his foot was visible - and she barked to confirm the find.”
Colleagues say the contrast between Daisy’s working and home personalities is textbook. Off-duty she is calm, affectionate and happy to join family hikes; the moment the patrol car siren sounds she howls with excitement, ready for the next search.
