Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) Operation AVRO swept back into Stockport on Thursday 13 February 2025, delivering one of the initiative’s busiest days on record with 65 people arrested for offences ranging from drug supply to burglary.

Officers began the push before dawn, briefing at Edgeley Park stadium before fanning out across Edgeley, Bredbury, Woodley and Heaton Norris to execute 10 warrants, raid addresses and conduct high-visibility patrols.

Traffic Team Seizes Vehicles and Arrests Fugitive Driver

The force’s Transport Unit recorded 55 motoring offences during the 24-hour blitz and impounded three vehicles. A 38-year-old man was arrested after a pursuit through Stockport town centre on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, having no insurance and possession of class A drugs.

Community Engagement at the Heart of AVRO

Alongside enforcement, officers visited St Anne’s Voluntary Academy in Heaton Chapel to deliver a knife-crime workshop, while the mounted unit patrolled the town centre to reassure shoppers and workers.

“We Act on What Residents Tell Us”

Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, GMP’s Stockport commander, said:
“Every AVRO deployment is shaped by intelligence from the public. Yesterday’s results show what we can achieve when communities speak up and we act.”

Council Leaders Welcome Results

Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, Stockport Council’s lead for communities, praised the “visible, proactive policing” and urged residents to keep sharing information.
Cllr Grace Baynham, responsible for highways, echoed the call, highlighting road-safety gains from the traffic stops.
