Oldham Group pledges to suspend pavement parking fines
The Oldham Group has pledged to suspend fines for illegal pavement parking in inner wards, distributing flyers promising 'NOT to FINE motorists in inner wards for parking on pavements'. The pledge received over 100 critical comments on Facebook, with residents calling it 'public endangerment' and citing difficulties for wheelchair users and parents with prams. Labour councillor Arooj Shah criticised the promise as 'a postcode lottery on basic safety'. Group leader Cllr Kamran Ghafoor defended the policy, arguing residents are 'left with no choice' due to narrow roads and lack of parking solutions. The group has not explained how it will deliver more parking. Other parties including Greens, Labour, and Reform UK criticised the approach as unsafe or divisive, while the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives did not comment.
