Oldham celebrates World Breastfeeding in Public Day with families

Hundreds of families gathered at Alexandra Park's new Environment Centre to celebrate World Breastfeeding in Public Day, marking a significant moment for Oldham's growing support for nursing parents. The event, organised by Home-Start HOST's Infant Feeding Peer Support Team with backing from Oldham Council, built on the success of last year's inaugural celebration in Rochdale.

The celebration comes as breastfeeding rates in Oldham reach a record high, with 52% of babies aged six to eight weeks being at least partially breastfed in 2025. New and expectant parents had the chance to meet local organisations and healthcare professionals, share experiences with other families, and take part in craft activities designed for young children.

One of the most popular features was the opportunity for parents to have professional breastfeeding portraits taken as keepsakes of their feeding journey. Grace Redmond, a mother who has attended the event for two years, shared her perspective: 'Having nursed both my boys, I understand first hand why feeding in public needs to be celebrated. I've fed hidden under muslins, in corners of cafes, and shielded by my pram, so it's amazing to have this event to raise awareness and promote...

The event also highlighted the Baby Welcome scheme, managed by Home-Start HOST across Tameside and Oldham, which recognises businesses that provide a warm welcome to breastfeeding parents. Denise Farrow, Infant Feeding Peer Support Team Manager at Home-Start HOST, explained the scheme's importance: 'Our aim is to give parents the confidence to breastfeed their baby when they are out and about, and this event has been a brilliant step in the right direction to normalise feeding in public.

Oldham's Best Start Family Hubs, described as 'one-stop shops' for families, are central to this support network. Jo Mayall, Infant Feeding Specialist for the hubs, emphasised the comprehensive approach: 'We're going for gold in Oldham with our infant feeding support, and we want to make sure local families feel empowered and supported-whether they breastfeed, express milk, or give their babies formula.
