Tommyfield Park construction begins in Oldham town centre
Construction has officially begun on Tommyfield Park, a new five-acre green space that will transform the heart of Oldham town centre. The project, delivered by Casey Construction on behalf of Oldham Council, marks a significant step in the area's regeneration, turning the former market site into a sustainable public space for residents, workers and visitors.
The park takes its name from Tommyfield Market, which operated on the site for more than 200 years before relocating to The Spindles. Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah described the start of work as 'a really special moment for Oldham,' emphasising how the new space will preserve the area's community spirit while creating something for future generations.
Deputy Leader Cllr Abdul Jabbar highlighted the park's sustainable design, explaining it will be 'fully self-sustaining' with features that support biodiversity and energy efficiency. The project aims to improve quality of life in the town centre while addressing climate challenges through responsible environmental design.
Residents can get a preview of the plans through a flythrough video showing how the space will look once complete. The development represents another milestone in Oldham's wider regeneration journey, creating a green oasis in the town centre where people can pause, spend time together and enjoy nature.
