Tommyfield name preserved in Oldham park despite new market
Oldham's new indoor market opens this Saturday, March 28, at 9am in the Spindles shopping centre, but it won't carry the historic Tommyfield name that many residents cherish. The council has named the new market simply 'The Market', sparking concerns that an important piece of Oldham's heritage might be lost. A petition to restore the Tommyfield name has gathered 38 signatures, with residents arguing the change 'risks erasing an important part of Oldham's heritage'.
Council leader Arooj Shah has moved to reassure residents that the Tommyfield name isn't disappearing. Instead, it's being preserved in a new five-acre town centre park that will be named Tommyfield Park. 'Tommyfield isn't just a word on a sign-it's part of our town's identity, shaped by more than 200 years of stories, hard graft, and community spirit,' Cllr Shah explained.
The new market opening coincides with the launch of The Loom, a 1000-capacity event space that can hold 700 seated or 500 dining. To mark the occasion, the first 100 people through the door will receive free goodie bags. The day will feature entertainment and activities as the town welcomes its new modern market facility.
While some residents remain disappointed about the name change, the council's decision to create Tommyfield Park aims to ensure the historic name continues to have a prominent place in Oldham's town centre. The park will provide a green space for families and residents to enjoy, carrying forward the community spirit that the Tommyfield market represented for generations.
