Tommyfield Market traders prepare for move to new Spindles location
After 45 years trading at Tommyfield Market, Anton Jaskiewicz is packing up his battery shop for the final time. The market closes Saturday at 5pm, ending an era for Oldham town centre. Traders have just one week to move to their new units at The Market in Spindles shopping centre before the grand opening on March 28.
The mood among the 40 or so remaining traders is surprisingly upbeat. 'I'm optimistic about moving into the new space,' says Jaskiewicz, though he's dreading the physical move. 'Tommyfield has seen better days-too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and it leaks sometimes.
Marilyn Cuschera, 71, was ready to retire until she spotted a stall opportunity two years ago. 'I just hate the thought that the market might go, so we've got to keep it going as best we can,' she says. Her customers have already promised to follow her to the new location.
Mark Crossley, who's run his fish stall for 38 years, is eager for people to see the new space. 'Customers will be proper surprised,' he says. 'Onwards and upwards-to pastures new.' James Brierley, who commutes daily from Rossendale, hopes locals will give the new market a chance despite initial apprehension.
The Market opens at 9am on March 28 with a day of entertainment and activities. Traders believe the modern facilities and connection to Spindles shopping centre could breathe new life into Oldham's retail scene.
