The major schemes leading to new Oldham schools and more places confirmed

New schools and expansions are coming to Oldham, offering more education choices but sparking debate over Eton's controversial academy plans.

Oldham's education landscape is set for major changes with new schools opening and existing ones expanding to meet growing demand. The most controversial development is Eton College's plan to open an academy at the former Tommyfield Market site, a decision that has divided the community since it was first proposed in 2023. While council leader Arooj Shah argues the school will help talented youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds, critics including the National Education Union fear it could...

A more certain development is Thornycroft School, which will open in late Spring in the Grade-II listed former kindergarten building on Wellington Road. The school will provide 70 places for children with special educational needs, keeping them closer to home rather than requiring long journeys to other areas. The building was sold by Hulme Grammar School last year when its kindergarten became financially unviable.

Two existing primary schools are also expanding. Woodlands Primary School on Broadbent Road has received approval for an extension to create more spaces for children with special educational needs and disabilities, though the exact number of additional places hasn't been specified. Werneth Primary School will also get an extension featuring a dedicated SEND unit, described by planning officers as 'much-needed' for the area.

These developments reflect Oldham's growing need for both mainstream and specialist education places. While the Eton project remains controversial with no timeline yet confirmed, the other schools are moving forward with clear plans to open or expand in the coming months, offering more options for local families.
