Spirit of Saddleworth Awards 2026: Community champions honoured

Saddleworth's volunteer heroes have been recognised for their tireless work improving community life across the area.

Community champions from across Saddleworth have been honoured at the inaugural Spirit of Saddleworth Awards, a new scheme launched by Saddleworth Parish Council to recognise exceptional voluntary service.

The ceremony at the Civic Hall on Thursday, March 19, celebrated 11 individuals and five community groups who have dedicated countless hours to improving life across the area.

Among the honourees was Carol Oldham, recognised for supporting independent businesses and community projects, and currently serving as chair of Friends of Saddleworth School.

Dr Eamon O'Daly was honoured for his work supporting people living with dementia and their carers, while Jennifer Greenwood was recognised for her contributions to Lydgate, including leading activities at the parish hall and campaigning to protect the birthplace of female suffrage in the village.

Tracy Buckley received praise for securing over £16,000 for Diggle School's Trim Trail through community fundraising, and William Smith was honoured for more than 20 years as secretary of the Delph Allotment Society.
