Saddleworth health centre plans move forward in Oldham
Plans for a new health centre in Saddleworth have taken another step forward after years of campaigning by local councillors. Helen Bishop and Sam Al-Hamdani, both Liberal Democrats, have been pushing for improved medical facilities in the area, and an update has now been shared on the progress.
The councillors recently met with the local NHS team to press for the completion of a business case that was promised last year. This document is crucial because it will allow the process of identifying funding for construction to begin. Without it, the project cannot move forward.
Cllr Bishop, who represents Saddleworth South, said the process is frustrating but they are keeping pressure on. She emphasised that this isn't just about a new building for GPs-it's about making services like blood testing accessible locally rather than forcing people to travel to Chadderton or Failsworth.
The next critical stage is called 'RIBA stage 3', which transforms the concept into a formal design with proper costings. Cllr Al-Hamdani, who represents Saddleworth West and Lees, explained that until they know the costs, they cannot determine which sites are feasible. While the former Saddleworth School site makes sense, the NHS must make the financial sums work.
Both councillors stressed their commitment to bringing health services to the heart of Saddleworth as quickly as possible. They want residents to have access to the medical care they need without having to travel long distances across Oldham.
