Royton teen told to leave Manchester club for being in wheelchair

A Royton teenager claims she was illegally discriminated against at a Manchester nightclub for being in a wheelchair, sparking community outrage.

An 18-year-old woman from Royton says she was told to leave a Manchester nightclub simply for being in a wheelchair, sparking outrage and claims of discrimination. Maddison Haining, known as Maddie, posted a video on Instagram describing how staff at Club Tropicana in the Gay Village asked her to leave without providing any explanation or attempting reasonable adjustments for her disability.

Haining, who has since identified the venue publicly, says she was told by the manager that she needed to leave, despite showing him the relevant laws under the Equality Act 2010. She claims the manager was rude, walked away mid-conversation, and even threatened to send her any fines the club might receive as a result of her presence.

The Equality Act 2010 requires businesses to make reasonable adjustments to ensure disabled people can access their services. Haining says none of these adjustments were attempted, and no documentation was provided to justify the decision to remove her from the premises. Her video has been viewed hundreds of times and has drawn an outpouring of support from viewers who called the incident 'atrocious' and 'disappointing'.

One commenter expressed particular dismay that an LGBTQ+ establishment would show 'disregard and exclusion of disabilities', while another said Haining 'deserves better'. Club Tropicana has told the BBC it is investigating the incident but has not yet responded to requests for comment from The Oldham Times. The case has raised questions about accessibility and discrimination in Manchester's nightlife venues.
