Royton pub The Haggate becomes community hub under mum-daughter team
The Haggate pub in Royton has been transformed into a bustling community hub under the management of Jamielee Conway and her daughter Shauna, who took over the historic venue in October last year. The mother-daughter team, supported by Jamielee's husband Matthew who helps out on weekends despite his day job as a plasterer, has breathed new life into the pub with a mix of traditional charm and modern events.
Since taking the reins, the trio has introduced themed nights including tapas evenings, football screenings, and family movie afternoons, alongside regular fixtures like Sunday bingo and quiz nights. The pub now serves homemade classics such as pies, burgers, and breakfasts, with special events like cheese and wine nights proving particularly popular with locals.
Jamielee, 41, describes The Haggate as 'welcoming' and says the pub's success comes down to its people and community spirit. 'We've got amazing regulars and a real community feel,' she explains, noting that seeing the pub packed for Christmas events and Sunday bingo nights has been particularly memorable.
Like many pubs, The Haggate faces challenges from rising costs, but the team has responded by offering good value deals such as Pie & Pint specials and keeping events creative to maintain affordability. Their best-selling beers include Manchester Pale Ale and guest ales, alongside regular JW Lees offerings. The pub continues to welcome new faces and maintains an active Facebook presence to keep locals informed about upcoming events.
