Primary School Offers Day 2026: What you need to know, including appeals
Thousands of families across Oldham are waiting nervously today as primary school offers are sent out to parents of children starting reception in September. Most will get one of their preferred schools, but for those who don't, there's a formal appeals process available.
If you're happy with the school your child has been allocated, you don't need to do anything-the place is yours. But for families who want to challenge the decision, the deadline to submit an appeal is May 8, with hearings scheduled for the week of July 13.
Oldham Council has published guidance on preparing children for school, covering everything from toilet training to social skills. There's also a dedicated 'Starting Reception' document on their website. Some schools handle their own appeals, including St Patrick's and Mayfield Academy, so parents need to check which process applies to them.
Appeal hearings are conducted online via Microsoft Teams, though alternative arrangements can be made. While attending isn't mandatory, speaking directly to the panel can strengthen a case. The independent panels consist of three to five members with no connection to the school or council.
