Police on beat keeping Oldham shoppers safe this Christmas
Extra police officers are patrolling Oldham town centre this Christmas to keep shoppers safe during the busy festive period. Sergeant Graham Craven and his team from the Oldham Town Centre and Retail Crime Team are leading the effort, with nine student officers including PC Ryan Homer joining regular patrols.
PC Homer, who has been on the Oldham beat for 15 weeks, says he's living his dream of helping people. 'This is what I have always wanted to do, helping to keep people safe,' he said. 'It is such a rewarding role being part of the community, including people stopping you to ask for directions and knowing you have helped them.
The police operation, part of Greater Manchester Police's Operation North Star, targets shoplifting and anti-social behaviour through increased foot patrols. Sergeant. Craven explained: 'We will have extra patrols out in the town centre across the winter period and our officers are here to help.
Oldham's winter safety plan involves a partnership between the council, police, and local businesses. The town centre is monitored by CCTV with direct radio links to shops, allowing police to respond quickly to any issues. Cllr Elaine Taylor praised the officers' work, saying it provides 'visible reassurance to residents, shoppers and businesses' and helps ensure Oldham remains 'a welcoming and safe place for everyone this Christmas and into the New Year.
