Padel courts planned for Marlborough Street Community Centre

Oldham community centre seeks to add three padel courts to boost sports facilities and generate income.

Marlborough Street Community Centre is pushing ahead with plans to build three padel courts in its car park, aiming to bring the fast-growing racket sport to Oldham. The proposal includes two double courts and one single court, all with rain canopies and wire mesh fencing above the glass walls. Padel Republic Oldham Ltd, a company incorporated just six weeks ago, is behind the application.

The plans argue the courts will boost both social and economic sustainability in the area. A planning statement claims they'll provide year-round access to high-quality sports facilities while generating financial benefits for the centre's long-term viability. The rain canopies are designed to allow all-weather play and help reduce noise for neighbours.

This isn't the first transformation for the building. Once the Pakistani Community Centre, it closed due to health and safety concerns and significant disrepair. Oldham Council stepped in with refurbishment investment after recognising its potential value to the community.

The application was validated on March 26 and will be decided by May 21. Residents can currently submit support or objections before the council makes its decision. If approved, the courts would join the centre's existing boxing facilities, creating a more diverse offering for local sports enthusiasts.
