Once Upon a Time exhibition opens at Gallery Oldham

Gallery Oldham is bringing the magic of children's books to life with its new 'Once Upon a Time' exhibition opening March 21. The show features over 50 original artworks from five acclaimed children's illustrators including Jarvis, creator of 'The Boy with Flowers in His Hair,' and Gillian Hibbs, whose 'Errol's Garden' has captivated young readers. The exhibition runs until September 5 and ties into the 2026 National Year of Reading, a UK-wide campaign encouraging people of all ages to rediscover reading. Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said the show celebrates imagination and creativity while promoting reading for pleasure. 'I know that families and individuals will enjoy spending time in a joyful space with lots of amazing activities to take part in,' he added.

A special launch event on March 21 at 2pm will give visitors the chance to meet the illustrators in person. Throughout the exhibition, Gallery Oldham will host talks including one with artist Sharon Davey on June 2. The books featured in the exhibition will be available to browse at the gallery, with even more titles available to borrow from Oldham Library just across the way.

This free exhibition offers families a creative destination during the spring and summer months, providing both entertainment and inspiration. For budding young artists, it's a rare opportunity to see original illustrations up close and learn about careers in children's book illustration.
