Oldham's new indoor market opens March 28 - shoppers share views

Oldham's new indoor market opens tomorrow amid mixed feelings about accessibility, trader costs and whether it can revive the town centre.

Oldham's new indoor market opens tomorrow at 9am in Spindles, marking the end of an era for Tommyfield Market which closed its doors for the final time last week.

The move has divided shoppers. Teenagers Ella Ashton and Morgan Taylor say few people their age are talking about it but they're 'curious' to check it out, hoping for better clothes shops.

Long-time residents like Irena Okopskyj, who moved to Oldham in 1996, have watched Tommyfield decline over the years but still value the unique items you can't find in supermarkets.

Accessibility concerns dominate for older shoppers. Linda Hand and Jacqueline, both in their 60s and 80s, worry about the longer walk to bus stops and miss the outdoor market experience.

Some traders like Steven Toon worry the new market will cost more to operate, while others like Marge and Christine believe the tram stop location could attract more visitors to the struggling town centre.
