Oldham Council launches Stepping Forward fostering campaign
Oldham Council has launched a pioneering fostering campaign called Stepping Forward, the first of its kind in Greater Manchester, aimed at moving children from residential care into loving family homes.
The scheme matches vulnerable children with specialist foster carers who receive extensive training and support, with carers coming from diverse backgrounds including social work, education, healthcare, and those with previous fostering experience.
Jo, Oldham's first Stepping Forward foster carer, has successfully welcomed two children into her home, describing how they've bonded and how one child has made remarkable progress in school and social development.
Connor Pinnons, Children in Our Care Team Manager, emphasised the careful transition planning that made the placements successful, from decorating bedrooms together to thoughtful details like using familiar washing powder.
Cllr Shaid Mushtaq, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, is encouraging local residents to consider becoming foster carers, highlighting that the scheme offers a generous financial package of over £75,000 annually and comprehensive support.
