Oldham's first solar farm begins construction at Wrigley Head
Work has started on Oldham Council's first large-scale solar farm at Wrigley Head in Failsworth, marking a major step in the borough's push for renewable energy and local green jobs. The 830,000 kWh facility, funded entirely by the council, will power around 310 homes each year and is part of the wider Green New Deal initiative.
North West contractor Vital Energi is building the solar farm over the next few months, with operations expected to begin in spring 2026. The site sits within the Moston Brook Green Corridor, and the council says the project will show how renewable energy can work alongside nature and green spaces.
Councillor Abdul Jabbar, who leads on sustainability for the council, said the solar farm will generate renewable energy, support local jobs and training, and help protect the environment. MP Jim McMahon called it a positive development for the community, bringing together renewable energy and environmental protection.
As well as generating clean electricity, the project will improve conditions for wildlife. New trees and flowers will be planted, and security fencing has been designed to allow animals to move freely through the area. The electricity will initially be sold to a power company, helping the council move towards greater energy self-sufficiency.
