Oldham school fire: Newman RC College reopens after science lab blaze
Newman RC College in Chadderton reopened on Monday after a fire broke out in a science lab on Wednesday afternoon, forcing the school to close for two days while safety checks were completed.
The blaze started around 1.50pm on March 11 when a wooden work bench caught fire. Three fire engines from Oldham, Hollins and Chadderton stations responded, with firefighters using breathing apparatus and a hose reel to extinguish the flames.
Headteacher Kerry Phillips confirmed that detailed inspections and safety checks, carried out in line with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service guidance, found the building safe to re-enter. Ten affected classrooms passed all safety checks and will be ready for use when students return.
The science laboratory where the fire began will remain closed for specialist repairs, with cosmetic work including ceiling tiles and carpet replacement scheduled for the Easter holidays. Phillips thanked parents for their patience and praised students and staff for their calm response during the evacuation.
