Oldham school closed after fire in science lab
Newman RC College in Chadderton was forced to close after a fire broke out in a science laboratory yesterday afternoon. The blaze, which involved a wooden work bench, triggered the evacuation of students and staff just before 2pm on Wednesday, March 11.
Three fire engines from Oldham, Hollins, and Chadderton stations rushed to the college on Broadway. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the flames, which were contained to the single laboratory thanks to the building's fire suppression systems.
Headteacher Kerry Phillips praised the calm response of pupils and the swift actions of staff during the evacuation. She confirmed that while the fire was quickly brought under control, essential safety checks are now underway, including inspections of electrical, gas, and fire safety systems.
The college will remain closed on Friday, March 13, with pupils expected to continue their learning remotely. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is working with the school to sign off the building as safe before students and staff can return to normal operations.
