Oldham pensioner Michael Graley dies on Cyprus family holiday inquest hears

Oldham pensioner Michael Graley died in Cyprus hospital during family holiday after becoming unwell.

Michael Graley, a 76-year-old pensioner from Oldham, died in a hospital in Famagusta, Cyprus, on August 16, 2025, while on a family holiday. The retired cemetery and crematorium manager had been unwell during the trip and was taken to hospital, where his condition deteriorated.

An inquest opened at Rochdale Coroners' Court on March 12, 2026, heard that Mr Graley had pre-existing health conditions including a heart condition, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. His GP had deemed him fit to fly before the holiday, but he became unwell while in Cyprus.

Police coroner's officer Megan Seddon told the court that Mr Graley was born in Oldham and lived on Course View on the Holts estate. He was married to Yvonne, a retired carer, and had been enjoying a family holiday when he fell ill.

Assistant coroner Matthew Cox determined that a full inquest is necessary and set a review date for April 16, 2026. The court will require information from Mr Graley's GP for the full hearing, which will be scheduled at a later date.
