Oldham's new indoor market opens with hundreds of shoppers
Oldham's new indoor market opened its doors today with hundreds of shoppers flooding through to see the £2.3m transformation. The market, which replaces the former Tommyfield Market that closed earlier this month, features around 70 traders across two levels connected to Spindles shopping centre.
The first 100 visitors received goodie bags as they entered the bustling space on Parliament Square. Grant and Sheila, two local shoppers, were among those impressed by the new layout. Great for stallholders, great for the people of Oldham.
Stallholders reported high footfall and positive feedback. The owner of Cosy Corner Bedding said the market's connection to Spindles and support from Oldham Council had created a strong community atmosphere. Nicky from Meat in the Middle Butchers described the opening as 'mad, really really good' with 'every minute' enjoyed.
Entertainment included a Taylor Swift tribute act, arcade games, and children's activities like face painting and balloon creations. However, not all feedback was positive. Marten, 74, found the space difficult to navigate with his mobility scooter due to crowds and prams.
The market has two entrances-one inside Spindles near H. Samuel and another on Parliament Square opposite Molino Lounge. With traders reporting strong opening day sales, the new market appears set to become a central part of Oldham's town centre once again.
