Young people invited to join Oldham MP's summer scheme
Young people in Oldham and Saddleworth have a chance to get hands-on experience in politics and community work this summer through Debbie Abrahams MP's Working for Your Community summer school. The two-week programme, open to 18 to 24-year-olds, runs in July and requires weekday attendance at venues across the borough.
The scheme splits into two parts-the first week focuses on learning about community development, campaigning, and communications through expert-led sessions. The second week puts those skills into practice with placements at local organisations and charities. Previous guest speakers have included Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield, and MP Angela Rayner.
Participants also get a trip to Parliament to meet politicians, journalists, and advisers. Former attendee Tahmina described the experience as eye-opening, saying it showed her that political work isn't just about meetings in Westminster but also involves getting involved with local agencies that help the community.
The programme aims to give young people practical experience while connecting them with the organisations that shape life in Oldham and Saddleworth. Those interested need to send a letter of application and CV to [email protected] to register their interest.
