New Oldham market cafe The Green Room review - great pie and chips
Oldham's new market welcomed its first customers on Saturday, and I couldn't resist trying out The Green Room cafe for lunch. The traditional market cafe setup with jacket potatoes in the oven and sandwiches in the glass case immediately drew me in.
The place was packed with locals eager to try the new food options. After securing a table, I joined the queue which moved slowly but steadily-not because staff were slacking, but because everyone wanted a taste of what was on offer.
I opted for a cheese and onion pie with chips and beans, washed down with a Coke. The £9.50 price tag felt like excellent value, especially given the generous portion size that left me struggling to finish.
The pie itself was a revelation-despite looking slightly underdone, the filling was perfectly cheesy and peppery with a nice texture. The pastry, while not winning any beauty contests, tasted buttery and delicious with a satisfying crunch to the crust.
The chips were the real star though-crispy, flavourful, and cooked to perfection. The beans were just beans, but they were hot and did their job. I'll definitely be back to try the jacket potatoes and paninis that looked so tempting on other tables.
