Oldham man spared jail for stalking and controlling ex-girlfriend

Oldham man avoids jail despite year-long campaign of controlling and stalking his ex-girlfriend.

A 25-year-old Oldham man has avoided prison despite being convicted of a year-long campaign of controlling and stalking behaviour against his ex-girlfriend. Khaledur Mahir, from Kirkham Street, was sentenced at Chester Crown Court after admitting to monitoring his partner's movements, communications, and clothing choices between January 2023 and August 2024.

The court heard how Mahir's behaviour escalated after the relationship ended, with the defendant turning up unannounced at Warrington addresses linked to the victim and tracking her movements. He also accessed her online accounts and emails during the stalking period between July and September 2024, causing her serious alarm and distress.

Judge Patrick Thompson acknowledged that Mahir's offences were serious enough to warrant custody, but opted to suspend an 18-month prison sentence for two years. Instead, Mahir must complete 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and undertake 150 hours of unpaid community work, while also paying £1,630 in court costs and a £187 victim surcharge.

A five-year restraining order now prohibits Mahir from contacting the victim or another named woman, and from entering Stockton Heath. The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic abuse and stalking in the region, with local support services available for victims of similar controlling behaviour.
