Oldham Local Plan 2039: Have Your Say on Town's Future
Oldham residents have just six weeks to shape the future of their borough as the council launches its final public consultation on the Local Plan 2039. The blueprint, which will guide development across Oldham for the next 15 years, covers everything from where new homes will be built to how town centres are protected and what infrastructure gets priority.
Councillor Elaine Taylor, the council's Deputy Leader, described this as the 'final stage' before the plan goes to an independent planning inspector. 'Planning shapes everyday life, from where we live and work to how we travel and spend our free time,' she said, emphasising that the plan isn't just about buildings but also touches on health, education and community safety.
The consultation runs until March 20th, giving residents time to comment on proposals that will determine where thousands of new homes and jobs are located, which green spaces and historic sites get protected, and how transport, schools and utilities are planned. The council has made it easy to get involved, with online submissions, library copies, and drop-in sessions at the Spindles Shopping Centre.
After the consultation closes, the council will submit the plan to the Secretary of State for independent examination. A planning inspector will then assess whether it meets legal requirements before it becomes the official blueprint for Oldham's development. For residents, this is the last chance to influence decisions that will shape their neighbourhoods for a generation.
