Oldham drivers and pedestrians in danger from blocked storm drains
Drivers and pedestrians in Shaw and Crompton are being forced to dodge dangerous puddles and flooded roads because blocked storm drains haven't been cleared for years, according to local councillor Howard Sykes. The Liberal Democrat representative says residents have been reporting clogged gullies for months, but nothing has been done despite repeated complaints.
Milnrow Road has become notorious for its large build-up of water, with residents regularly posting photos on social media showing the extent of the flooding. Councillor Sykes says he reported the problem in December but has had 'no response' from the council, describing the situation as 'like talking to a brick wall'.
The flooding is creating real hazards for local people. Drivers are having to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid the water, while pedestrians-especially those in wheelchairs or pushing prams-are forced to wade through dirty puddles just to cross the road. Councillor Sykes says it's making people feel the area is 'unloved and uncared for'.
Other affected roads include Cowie Street, Smallbrook Road, and Glebe Street, with similar problems reported in Royton and Saddleworth. The council claims the flooding is due to heavy rainfall rather than blocked drains, but admits to 'significant delays' in their gulley cleaning schedule caused by staff issues. They say they've cleared over 20,000 drains so far but only deviate from their cleaning schedule when there's a risk to property or highway safety.
