Oldham Council seeks partner for £5.6bn Green New Deal energy programme
Oldham Council is looking for a major partner to help deliver a £5.6 billion plan to transform how the borough gets its energy. The council wants to cut carbon emissions, protect residents from rising energy bills, and create local jobs by generating clean power right here in Oldham.
The council has published a tender for a Strategic Energy Partner who can bring the expertise and investment needed to make this happen. Early projects could include a low-carbon heat network in Oldham town centre, solar panels on council buildings, and more electric vehicle charging points across the borough.
Councillor Abdul Jabbar, who leads on sustainability for the council, said this is a 'big moment' for Oldham. He wants a partner who shares the council's ambition to deliver real change-not just promises on paper.
The tender opens on Friday 27 March and the council expects to appoint a partner by autumn 2027. The plan also includes working with Oldham College and GM Green Economy to make sure local people can get the training and jobs that come with this green energy revolution.
