Oldham after-school club praised by Ofsted for boosting children's confidence
An after-school club at St Mary's C of E Primary School in Shaw has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for creating a nurturing environment where children develop confidence and positive attitudes. The Squirrels club, which provides care for children aged four to 11 before and after school, received 'expected standard' ratings across all four categories assessed under Ofsted's new grading system.
Inspectors who visited the club in January observed children showing 'can-do' attitudes and proudly displaying their artwork to staff and friends. The report noted that staff recognise children's achievements and offer abundant praise, which immediately boosts their self-esteem. Children were described as beaming with confidence and having good levels of engagement during activities.
The club was commended for helping children build secure and trusting relationships with their key workers, and for providing well-planned opportunities to develop physical skills. Ofsted described the setting as enabling children to feel 'safe, calm and well prepared', where they behave well and show positive attitudes. The atmosphere was noted as calm, relaxing and welcoming.
Headteacher Pam Hartley welcomed the recognition, saying the report confirms the club continues to meet expected standards for high-quality care and education. Inspectors recommended enhancing daily routines to provide more consistent opportunities for children to strengthen independence skills, and targeting professional development more precisely to staff's needs. The club operates from St Mary's C of E Primary School on Rushcroft Road, serving working parents in the Shaw area.
