Oldham pub with no phones rule draws young customers
The Old Bulls Head pub on Rochdale Road in Shaw has become something of a local curiosity-and a success story-by banning mobile phones and laptops entirely. Run by David and Andrea Smith since 2024, this Samuel Smith's Brewery pub has embraced a 'no technology' rule that's drawing in younger customers despite its old-fashioned approach.
Andrea Smith, 57, says the pub's unique atmosphere is exactly what's attracting people. 'More young people and couples are coming in-we're a different pub and that's what draws people in,' she explains. The Shaw landlady insists that while customers can't use their phones, they're actually making better connections.
The pub offers traditional entertainment including pool, darts, and a weekly quiz, with special events like Cheese and Pickle nights and fancy dress parties. The pool table has recently been moved to a larger tap room to make the space even more sociable. Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations saw board games bringing everyone together, creating what Andrea describes as 'having your family around.
Taddy's lager is the most popular drink, though the stout is getting rave reviews from some customers who say it's better than Guinness. The pub's reputation is spreading beyond Shaw, with Andrea noting that 'word's getting out' and 'more people coming in from further afield' who are searching for an authentic pub experience. In an age of constant digital connection, this throwback pub is proving that sometimes the old ways still work best.
